KCHS Students Explore Careers

May 17, 2014 by Kent County High School

Share

On May 8, tenth graders at Kent county High School concluded a two-week job shadowing program that included visits to local business.

The annual program provides and opportunity for students in the STEM (science technology, engineering, mathematics) program to meet with professionals in these disciplines. These professionals provide an inside view into the day-to-day responsibilities within a given profession and identify promising speciality areas within the field.

They lay out the educational requirements necessary to enter the profession and provide insight into future opportunities. They offer crucial information for students considering a particular career, such as whether job opportunities in the field are growing or shrinking, and if particular skills are vulnerable to being outsourced to other countries or replaced with computer-driven technologies or robots.

The job shadowing program is vital for young students striving to relate their academic studies to real world careers. The program helps students form realistic expectations at a pivotal point in their eduction when they are beginning to envision their own career paths.

Participating businesses included:

Chesapeake Architects
Chester River Hospital Center
David A. Bramble, Inc
Dixon Valve & Coupling
DMS Associates
ILSbio
Benchworks
University of Maryland Extension
