St. Michaels Events has opened a non-profit cooperative art gallery “Local Port of Art” in historic St. Michaelw. Located in the heart of the retail/historic district at 210 S. Talbot Street, it opened in mid-May. This amazing two level gallery has spacious areas that also include a workshop, meeting room and studio/gallery rooms. Featuring Lisa Pierson, Lee Boynton, Jenn Wagner & art from the collection of Gerald “Bud” Cochran.
The vision for the Gallery is to be a year round sales and exhibition space for members, as well as play host to small group shows, solo shows, fundraisers, benefits and outreach shows to help engage and pull the community together.
“We are thrilled to be involved in this project,” says Marianne Stallsmith, owner of the Candleberry General Store, a 10 year business owner a partner in this venture. “I think the community will be very pleased at the variety and quality of the art work we have to offer. There will be something in every price range and contact information for every artist will be available for custom orders.”
The goal is to provide local artist a proper venue to show their work together in an open environment. Space is limited and participating artists will be selected through a jurying process designed to create a high-quality collection of artwork in jewelry, furniture, paintings, photography, ceramics, fiber arts, woodwork, mixed media and sculpture.
“It is exciting to be part of this project,” says Aida Trissell, owner of Aida’s Victoriana Inn for the past 9 years and one of the four partners bringing this project to town. Last year we started St. Michaels Events 501(c) with the mission to build a strong community partnership to promote tourism and economic development in the fields of arts & education and we feel that this is putting us one step closer to our vision. We are dividing the work and sharing in the fun and enthusiasm to create a successful art gallery for all the artists and the community.
Local Port of Art looks forward to collaborating with other art factions in the community for future events and welcomes new member applications. Applications are available in person at the shop and via email: [email protected]
