It is impossible for Mayor Carolyn Sorge to talk of Betterton’s future without telling of the small bayside town’s history. Once a booming center for summer vacations, and a minor hub for Eastern Shore produce, Betterton lost most of that vitality once the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was built in 1952. And from that critical moment on, it has had to reinvent itself.
For almost half of that time, Carolyn Sorge, a retired teacher at Kent School, has been at the helm as the town’s mayor. Looking back over her tenure (she has chosen not to run for reelection this year), the mayor reflects on Betterton’s history, the unique renovation of the local Catholic church into a new town hall, and her positive impressions of working with Kent County government over the last few decades.
