RiverArts’ two upcoming March Shows focus on painting and sculpture and will be judged with monetary prizes for Sculpture and for Painting. Both shows will be curated by award-winning Chestertown pastel artist, Mary Pritchard. The sculpture will be judged by John Ruppert, a nationally known sculptor and the first Distinguished Visitor for the groundbreaking SANDBOX project spearheaded by Alex Castro at Washington College. Ruppert will be selecting a Best in Show and a second place winner, both of whom will receive monetary prizes.
Sculpting The Form
RiverArts is searching for sculptors to enter Sculpting the Form, a judged show enlisting three dimensions to portray the artist’s viewpoint, whether figurative, conceptual or abstract. Sculptors working in all media, including metal, paper, clay, glass, marble, plaster, bronze, wood and other materials, are encouraged to exhibit their sculpture in all forms of expression. Artists are also encouraged to submit a one- or two-sentence statement about the creative impulse that inspired their sculpture and send them to Mary Pritchard at [email protected]. Sculptors with entries that require a special base for exhibiting are asked to notify Mary Pritchard by email in advance of check-in for the show.
The Painter’s Eye
RiverArts invites painters working in all media to enter this judged show of painterly expressions and images emanating from the painter’s eye. The show will feature original paintings from local and regional artists working in all media, including pastel, oil, watercolor, acrylics and mixed media. The show will focus on the ways that the artist’s point of view is expressed through color, shape, line and texture. Artists are encouraged to submit a one- or two-sentence note about what they were “seeing” or looking for when creating their works of art as illustrated by Mary Pritchard’s statement about her pastel painting, “Winter Graphic,” part of a series of paintings called “Looking Through.”
“In this series I discover a landscape within the landscape. In this case, however, the real attraction was the dramatic pattern made by the snow melted from the asphalt. I was particularly pleased that such a prosaic event made for a striking image.” Please send your artist statements to Mary Pritchard at [email protected].
For each show, artists may submit up to two entries. The fees are $10 per piece for members and $20 per piece for non-members. Check-in dates for art are Sunday, March 2 from 1-3 and Monday, March 3 from 10-1. Best in Show and Second Place prizes are awarded for each exhibition. The opening reception is Friday, March 7 from 5-8 p.m. For questions, please contact Mary Pritchard at [email protected].
