To celebrate Black History Month and raise money for a scholarship fund, the Chesapeake College Multicultural Advisory Committee (MAC) is hosting the 15th annual community breakfast on Saturday, Feb. 15 in the Chesapeake College Caroline College Center at 8:30 a.m. The event is open to members of the public.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the J.C. Gibson Scholarship Fund. Each semester the committee awards Chesapeake students scholarship money to purchase textbooks. Last year, the event raised more than $1,500 for the scholarship fund.
MAC member and Director of Multicultural Affairs Paul Wheeler said the event is designed to encourage community unity and celebrate diversity.
“We look forward to the five-county communities to joining together to honor the achievements of African-Americans,” Wheeler said. “The multicultural committee strongly supports Chesapeake’s efforts to reach out to the service community, and attending this event would be an excellent way for members of the community to support Chesapeake and our students.”
This year’s event is also a salute to education. The following retired educators will be honored: Rev. Clarence Hawkins of Kent County, Ms. Matelyn Hollis of Queen Anne’s County, Ms. Elizabeth Pinkett of Caroline County, Kathleen Francis of Talbot County and Leotha Hull of Dorchester County
Entertainment will be provided by the Gospel Shepherds of Kent County. Tickets for the event (including a buffet breakfast) are $15. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call Paul Wheeler at 410-827-5857.
