On Sunday, January 26, 10 AM, Dr. Linda Gustitus will give a sermon entitled “ Prolonged Solitary Confinement: A Stain on the U.S. Justice System” for the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River, 914 Gateway Dr., Chestertown.
The U.S. is a world leader in the use of prolonged solitary confinement for its prisoners, many of whom are mentally ill. Dr. Linda Gustitus, President of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, will talk on the scope and growth of this problem – and how it violates our First UU Principle regarding the inherent worth and dignity of each person – and then will propose opportunities for reform.
Dr. Gustitus has worked in Washington in many capacities, including being Chief of Staff to Sen. Carl Levin (D. Mich.) and a member of the bipartisan Congressional Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan. She brings her experience and sense of justice to this important and growing challenge.
Childcare and religious education available at the service. Call 410-778-3440 for more information.
