Dance in the New Year as Vic Vacuum and the Attachments play the classic hits and great dance tunes of the 50s, 60s, 70s and more at the Mainstay in Rock Hall, Maryland on Saturday January 18 at 8:00 pm. Admission is $15. For information and reservations call 410-639-9133. Information is also available at the Mainstay’s website https://www.mainstayrockhall.org.
The Mainstay kicks off its 2014 season with a dance party with Vic Vacuum and the Attachments, led by Kent County’s own Mike McBride on electric bass. The band offers classic rock with a focus on the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s, with occasional visits to other decades. They are favorites at Rock Hall FallFest, where they have had the crowds literally dancing in the street.
Mike McBride grew up locally, playing in school bands. He has a photo of himself and his friends after winning a battle of the bands in Chestertown’s Fountain Park in the 1960s. Later, he became interested in folk music, and he credits guitarist Bill Matthews for introducing him to the acoustic guitar styles of Merle Travis, Mississippi John Hurt and others. In addition to guitar and bass, he also plays mandolin.
McBride moved to Nashville in the 1970s. There he played with country “outlaw” Johnny Paycheck and with such country rock legends as Barefoot Jerry. He also recorded with fiddle legend Vassar Clements, mandolin master Jethro Burns, and country stars David Frizell and Shelly West, among others. He can be heard on six platinum records and six gold records, with more than 15 million in sales.
In a recent interview, McBride reminisced about being a member of Paycheck’s band when “Take this Job and Shove It” soared to the top of the country music charts. “I did 309 days on the road in 1977,” he said, “and nearly as many the next two years.”
Joining McBride are Carl Peters, guitar and vocals; Joe Martone, keyboards and vocals; and Dale Trusheim on drums and vocals. Peters was a member of Blind Willie and Nasty Habits, two blues-rock bands that gigged regularly around Delaware. Martone has played with nationally known acts including Chuck Berry, the Drifters, the Coasters, and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. Trusheim has played for years around Maryland and Delaware, and was the original drummer with Fat Shadow, Cowboy Jazz and the Wazoos.
Drummer Dale Trusheim was with McBride when he was trying to come up with a band name for an upcoming gig. Trusheim said “I always wanted to be in a band named ‘Vic Vacuum and the Attachments.'” After cracking up laughing, McBride decided to use the name for his group, and it stuck.
For this good-time party, the Mainstay will sport a good sized dance floor but there will still be seats for listeners and of course, the bar will remain open with beer, wine and soft drinks and snacks.
