On Sunday, November 17, 10 AM, Mr. James Gibbons Walker will give a sermon entitled “The Secret Six: A Clash of Principles on the Eve of the War of Rebellion” for the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River, 914 Gateway Dr., Chestertown. The Abolitionist John Brown led the raid on the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, an early step leading to the Civil War. He has been both condemned and praised for this deed. When planning the attack, Brown received the secret support of six notable men, who were founders of hospitals, schools and other philanthropic institutions. All of them were either Unitarians or followers of liberal religion. Come hear about the “Secret Six,” and consider questions regarding means and ends, morality, and the greater good.
