An exhibition of work by Baltimore sculptors Steven R. Jones and Megan Van Wagoner will open November 1 and run through November 29 at the Tree of Life Gallery. The exhibit will include sculpture and functional objects made in glass, clay, bronze an other materials.
Steven Jones has been exploring portraiture for most of his career. This exhibition features a series of disembodied glass heads on blown Venetian goblet stems. They are reminiscent of colonial era knick-knacks. Their sculpted faces are caricatures of men and women elevated on a pedestal of frivolity. A second series of work explores the intersection of man and chicken. Chickens loosely rendered in bronze have
had their heads replaced with glass human heads. Many of these chimeras are self-portraits, others are loosely based on friends and family. All capture the expressive nature of people. Steve will also be exhibiting blown glass bottles and functional objects for the home with a similar expressive style.
Megan Van Wagoner is exhibiting a series of clay and mixed media sculptures titled, “Comfort Food.” Corn, potatoes and pears are nested amongst voluptuous pillows made of porcelain. The pillows appear soft and full, but are rigid and hard. The produce has been reproduced in various materials from glass to bronze to enameled ceramics. This makes them both permanent and precious.
