Unitarians Discuss Universal Concept of Suffering October 20

October 17, 2013 by Unitarian Universalists

Share

On Sunday, October 20, 10:00 AM, Dr. Balu Athreya will give a sermon to the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River, 914 Gateway Dr., Chestertown entitled “On Suffering: Universal Concepts from Eastern and Western Traditions.” Dr. Athreya reminds us of Helen Keller’s words, “All the world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming it.”

Dr. Athreya says, “Suffering is not just of the body. It is of the person. Suffering is an inevitable part of life. It is an intensely personal and lonely experience. Based on my background as a physician working with children with chronic illness, I plan to look at suffering from a pragmatic point of view as well as from the point of view of Eastern traditions, based on my roots and inclinations. I hope we can address how to help those who are suffering during our discussion, as a group.”
