After 16 days of economic uncertainty and political posturing, the government shutdown has ended and the first ever default on our country’s full faith and credit has been avoided. I applaud those who were able to set aside ideological differences and reach an agreement to reopen our government and continue serving the American people. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, Congressman Andy Harris chose to continue being part of the problem and voted no to returning 800,000 federal workers back to work; he voted no to making sure children around the district can return to head start programs; and he voted no to providing much needed loans to small businesses in the First District. The complete disregard he continues to show for the people who elected him to serve is outrageous and unacceptable.
“Over the last 16 days, Andy Harris and his tea party counterparts have caused inconceivable damage to the very economy they claim to want to grow. It’s estimated that this completely unnecessary shutdown has taken $24 billion dollars out of our still fragile economy and decreased growth for the quarter. This is fiscal recklessness at it’s worst,” said Dr. John LaFerla, Congressional Candidate, Maryland District 1.
Dr. LaFerla continued, saying: “With this latest political game, Congressman Harris has forever forfeited his right to the fiscal moral high ground. It is now crystal clear that he only pretends to care about economic growth and debt reduction. And he does not care at all about making sure our children and elderly have the food assistance they need.”
“Congressman Harris, I implore you to put the games and political tactics aside for the people of the First District. No one wins when we allow extremism and rhetoric to ruin our Democracy. It’s time to represent the people who sent you to Congress,” said LaFerla.
