RiverArts’ Fall Feast of Classes Expands in October

October 4, 2013 by Chestertown RiverArts

Sign up now for one or more of the classes coming to RiverArts in October. The schedule has been designed to appeal to a variety of interests, so there is probably something in this cornucopia that all members and nonmembers will enjoy.

Knitting with Master Knitter Sue Wright

Sue has been teaching knitting in Chestertown since 1999, when she became a certified knitting instructor. Soon after that she was awarded Master Knitter Status by the Knitting Guild of America.  She is a perennial favorite and each year offers something new and different.  This fall, she will be teaching her students how to make a lacey beret, and how to create a diagonal hand knitted jacket.  Both classes will be held in her Cannon Street Studio, and she will contact all enrollees regarding the materials needed for each class.

Lacey Beret: October 19 and November 9, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Members pay $65.00, nonmembers $75.00.

Diagonal Hand Knitted Jacket: October 19, November 9, November 23, and December 7, from 10 AM to 12 noon.  Members pay $120.00, nonmembers $150.

Wouldn’t either of these make a wonderful holiday gift ?

Hand Building with Marilee Schumann

If you have not yet gotten to know Marilee, stop by the Tree of Life Gallery at 312 Cannon Street, and strike up a conversation with her about pottery.  You will be drawn in by her philosophy and her passion, and want to learn more.  Marilee earned her MFA in Sculpture at the University of Maryland, has served on the faculty of the Washington College Art Department, and inspired countless potters with her classes at the Clay Studio in Still Pond.  Go to her website at www.marileeschumannart.com to see more about her and her work.

Marilee has now agreed to give a 4 week class on hand building at the RiverArts Gallery.  Classes will be held every Thursday evening from October 17 through November 7.  Coil and slab building techniques will be covered, and students will also gain knowledge on the history, aesthetics, and design elements of hand-built pottery.

Sessions run from 6 to 8 PM.  Students are asked to bring basic pottery and sculpting tools.  Classes will be small, and homework necessary.

Member cost is $90.00 for four weeks.  Nonmembers will pay $115.00.

Second Fridays with Vicco

We are excited to bring you another lecture series by one of our most interesting artists, Vicco von Voss.  Vicco is a graduate of Washington College and apprenticed in Germany.  His one-of-a-kind pieces are highly sought after, several recently shown in the Massoni Gallery.  See more about his work at www.viccovonvoss.com or visit his studio in Centreville on November 2, during the RiverArts Studio Tour.

Starting this month, Vicco will give a series of three lectures on various aspects of wood and woodworking.  Whether you dabble, consider yourself an accomplished woodworker, or just admire the beauty of handcrafted pieces, you will enjoy these stimulating talks.  Lectures will be given in the RiverArts Gallery from 5:30 to 6:30.  Come after work and before dinner.  Bring a friend with you!

Understanding the Subtleties of Wood – October 11

The Impact of Nature on Culture – November 8

A Hands-on Approach – December 13

Member cost for each lecture is $15.00.  Nonmembers pay $20.00.

To register for any of these classes go to the ‘classes’ icon on the RiverArts web site, www.chestertownriverarts.org and download the registration form.  You can bring it into the gallery with your payment.  You can also use Paypal on the website, email us at [email protected], or call 410 778 6300 with your credit card information.

Coming in November: two photography classes

Photographing Tall Ships with David Biehler, November 1 and 2

iPhonography with Karen Messick – November  23.

Details coming out next week on both of these!
