Call it the anti-award.
The Maryland League of Conservation Voters presented Maryland’s U.S. Rep. Andy Harris with a “climate change denier award” on Tuesday to call attention to what the organization calls the Republican lawmaker’s “extreme anti-science views.”
The award, part of a nationwide day of action by conservationists to hold climate change deniers accountable, was bestowed during separate events at Harris’ offices in Chester and Bel Air.

Surely you jest. Harris voting for the farm bill was a joke. He knew it would not pass the House, contained entire too much money to be used for food stamps. Food stamps should nort even be included in the farm bill.Let’s provide the funds needed by the agriculture sector of our economy and stop playing political games with our nation’s food and fiber, in the nation’s capitol. Mr. Harris, I guess you think the constituents in the First Congressinal District are somewhat stupid. Wake Up!
Mike Hunt says
Mr. Hall, I usually find your comments thoughtful, but perhaps less so this time around. I think there are very good arguments to vote either for or against the farm bill as Congress currently constitutes it, broadly speaking. I believe everyone should vote their conscience on the matter as few, I would suggest, see our farm and food policies of today as anything other than deeply flawed.
As for the League of Conservation Voters, I always thought I liked them and am usually with them, but their decision to bestow this offensive award on anybody means that I will now never give them a dime. Tony Caligiuri, their chairman, was Wayne Gilchrest’s chief of staff. I loved Gilchrest, but Caligiuri needs to bury the hatchet and stop this crass politicization. Harris’ office explained that his vote for the farm bill was because of funding for Bay restoration. The MDLCV should be enthralled.

Fletcher:
You have to admit that Harris appears consistent. I don’t believe he has ever voted for a spending authorization. In a country deeply in debt, with no end to spending in sight, might that not be a good thing?

I’d like to receive one of the denier awards. How do I apply for one? I’m one of the 3 percent who believe that humans can’t control the climate of the earth. Who do we think we are? The Great Oz? Heck, we can’t even accurately predict the weather from day to day. If the earth is actually getting warmer, blame it on the sun. Does anyone remember that back in the l970s, climatologists (the all knowing 97 percent) said we were entering a new ice age?

A mind that is closed is a horrible thing to waste. While we can’t rule out that man has contributed to climate change, neither can mother nature be ruled out. Weatherman, Joe Bastardi presents a compelling case for ocean currents being the primary cause. Unlike Al Gore and his followers, Mr. Bastardi has no financial gain in presenting his views. He isn’t going to receive a Nobel prize, but what if Mr. Bastardi is right? It won’t be the first time that conventional wisdom has been proven to be wrong.
What if we have spent untold billions on a fools errand? What if we have a Secretary of the Interior that doesn’t have a clue as to the cause of climate change? For the past 17 years the temperature of the planet has not changed. Today, Soviet scientists are predicting a mini ice age. Do we not owe ourselves a second look before we leap off the cliff?
joel brandes says
I am starting to feel that being called a denier is a badge of honor. While I can not say that man has not contributed to climate change, I am beginning to believe that Al Gore may have pulled off the greatest hoax in the history of the world. It is not just weatherman Joe Bastardi that points to ocean currents, Mr. Ballard of the National Geographic seems to confirm that. see- ocean currents and climate education.nationalgeographic.com
We also have learned that the Antarctic ice cap is growing. The hole in the ozone layer is shrinking after having grown without fluorocarbons entering the atmosphere. That is called reasonable doubt. What is not in doubt is that Mr. Gore has obtained fabulous wealth pushing his theory of global warming.

I am not a climate change denier. I just have no faith in the science behind it. Some 30 years ago, scientists were telling us a black hole in the ozone belt, caused by man, was bringing about global warming. Today, we learn the hole is shrinking. We haven’t altered our life style that much, have we? Scientists once bled people to cure disease. Some even drilled holes in the skull to relieve headaches. We were told melting Arctic ice was causing the demise of the Polar Bear. Today, we learn their population has increased dramatically. Until my faith is restored, I’m not giving up my car that runs on gasoline. I’m going to continue using electricity generated by burning fossil fuel. I’m going to eat what I wish and patiently wait for scientists to prove me wrong.

Who can you trust? The ice in the antarctic now covers 18.077 million sq. km.. The previous record, set in 2010 was 17.783 million sq. km.. The average from 1981 to 2010 was 16.869 sq. km.. Why is nothing mentioned by the climate change crowed about this fact? Why do we hear nothing about the hole in the ozone layer cycling? These things simply don’t fit the narrative of the sky is falling group.
Joe Lill says
Joel,
Here’s a link to an article in the Christian Science Monitor that contradicts your statements that the Antarctic ice cap is growing. Who knows?
It just seems a responsible attitude toward stewardship of the planet to limit the impact we have on our “home”. I too will continue to use my car, ( a 50 mpg Hybrid ), use electricity to power the Compact Fluorescent and LED light bulbs in my house, and strive for zero waste to do my part.

There’s quite a good book about ‘How to Cure a Climate Change Denier’ written by a former eco-activist who turned ‘climate denier’ about what it would take to cure him.
