The Chesapeake Brass Band, a First Place winner in the 2013 North American Brass Band Association Competition, will play in Fountain Park in Chestertown this coming Saturday, July 13, 2013, at 7:00 pm. This multiple award-winning brass band is a crowd favorite with its rousing performances of traditional marches, light classics, big band hits and jazz arrangements of popular standards. Saturday’s concert will include marches by John Philips Sousa, a jazz flugelhorn solo of Light Walk, a jazz arrangement of Caravan, and the overture to the opera Nabucco. The concert begins at 7 p.m. in Fountain Park, and lasts roughly 90 minutes. The weather is supposed to be fine on Saturday. Admission is free.
Modeled on a traditional British format that arose in the 1830s, the Chesapeake Brass Band is one of about 100 such bands in the U.S., and the only one in Delaware. In place of woodwind instruments, it uses a variety of brass instruments to achieve a full range of sound: soprano cornets, flugelhorns, euphoniums, baritone horns, two types of tuba, and trombones in different ranges. It also has a full percussion section.
The Chesapeake Brass Band is an all-volunteer organization, made up of amateur and professional musicians from Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The 35 members include current or retired music teachers, engineers, craftsmen, accountants, marketing executives, a wine maker, and two lawyers. Its musical director, Russell E. Murray, is a faculty member at the University of Delaware, where he has published research on music of the Renaissance. Dr. Richard Fischer is the band’s founder.
