Sassafras River’s 70 member Business Council Celebrates Eight Years

November 15, 2012 by Wendy Costa

There was a celebratory atmosphere at Molly’s Inn on November 13 when members of the Sassafras River Business Council (SRBC) held their annual meeting and dinner. The organization was started in 2004 to promote business in the Galena area. Now, there are 70 business and citizen members, including a growing number of members in the Millington area.

During 2012, the SRBC spearheaded “Second Saturdays” in Galena; created a beer garden during Galena’s Dogwood Festival; assisted the town of Millington with the development of a museum and a farmers’ market; and held a successful fundraiser, “Taste of the Sassafras” at summer’s end. That event was so successful that John Carroll, president of the SRBC, was able to hand $300 checks to representatives of five north county churches for their food outreach ministries, as well as to Kent County Library.

Sisters by Chance provided the appetizers and desserts, and Molly’s catered the dinner. Nine new board members were elected, and they promptly elected John Carroll president of the SRBC for the third year in a row. John Carroll, 31, is both a realtor and an antiques dealer in Galena. He described progress on the development of festivities to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 in early May, 2013. The celebration will be a collaborative effort between the SRBC, the Friends of Kent County, Maryland – War of 1812, the Dogwood Festival, and the Kitty Knight House. For more information about the Sassafras River Business Council, contact John Carroll at 410-708-0247.
