Discussing and documenting end-of-life wishes can be awkward, confusing, and just plain hard. Nevertheless, the ability to control our own lives can be an increasing concern as we age, and articulating our wishes is a key step to ensuring that control.
HomePorts, Inc., in conjunction with the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River, will present an educational program entitled, “Understanding Advanced Directives and the Maryland Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (MOLST)” on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at the Chestertown Town Hall building. The program is free and open to the public. Contributions to support this programming are gratefully accepted.
Dr. J. David Newell, professor emeritus of philosophy and religion at Washington College and senior fellow at the Aspen Institute, will moderate the program. Brian Childs, PhD, Director of Clinical Ethics and Spiritual Care for Shore Health System, University of Maryland Medical System, will discuss Advanced Directives and explain the new Maryland Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (MOLST) form. Dr. Childs will be joined by Madeline Steffens, RN, palliative care specialist at the Chester River Hospital Center, University of Maryland Medical System. There will be ample time for questions from the audience, and the MOLST form will be available for review.
Dr. Childs received his baccalaureate degree in philosophy from Maryville College, and his M.Div., Th.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary. In addition to his work at Shore Health, Dr. Childs is a minister in the United Presbyterian Church, Presbytery of Baltimore, and Professor in the Graduate School of Management and Technology at University of Maryland University College. He previously held a chair as Professor of Pastoral Theology at Columbia Theological Seminary.
