Jay Jacobs, one of Kent County’s delegates to the Maryland General Assembly, will discuss the recent special sessions held by this year’s Assembly at the Thursday, September 20 Conservative Breakfast Group meeting. The CBG meets every Thursday at 7:30 AM at the Holiday Inn in Chestertown.
Maryland’s legislature usually meets for only 90 days each year. Normally, the session ends in early April. Since 1996, there have been only 3 special sessions until this year, and never two in one year. This year, there have been two, so far. The first was to agree on who would suffer the most from the large tax increases planned by our state. The second was to expand state sponsored gambling to include an additional casino, to add table games, and to reduce fees paid by the gambling companies for their licenses. Our own Jay Jacobs was there to observe the wheeling and dealing among the Democratic Party Bosses, and will give CBG members a unique insight into the action.
Gren Whitman says
“CBG” stands for “Conservative Breakfast Group,” and the Spy should identify it as such, as Del. Jacobs will be preaching to his choir.
As far as who “will suffer the most” from the special session’s taxing decisions, that is a matter of vigorous opinion.
As far as I am concerned, the legislature acted responsibly on taxes, and I don’t anticipate “suffering” one iota.
