WYPR is reporting this morning that former Congressman Wayne Gilchrest says he’s considering trying to win back his old seat. Gilchrest represented the First District as a Republican for 18 years, until he was unseated in the 2008 GOP primary by Andy Harris. Currently, Democrats don’t have a candidate to challenge Harris, after this year’s primary winner, Wendy Rosen, was forced to drop out of the race earlier this week amid revelations of voter fraud. Because a withdrawal deadline for has already passed, Rosen will appear on the ballot, so a Democratic challenger would have to run as a write-in candidate.

One of the most respected men on the Eastern Shore. He had my vote for 18 years – and he would have my vote again.

A write-in candidacy, particularly with less than eight weeks before the election, is an uphill battle, to say the least. But many of us in the First District have gotten to know Wayne Gilchrest over the past 18 years. We know he is a thoughtful, highly-principled man, with no connection to special-interest groups. I have no idea even which party he’d caucus with if he returned to Congress. But I know he’d think for himself, listen to his constituents, explain his positions clearly, and represent us with down-to-earth honesty.
I hope he will run, and that he will get the support, both in dollars and effort, he will need to succeed.

Oooops! Spy editors need to read their own paper and pull this story. Wayne Gilchrist has a huge and well-deserved fan club, but he’s not a candidate.
