Betty Anne Connolley Memorial Garden Rejuvenated

September 13, 2012 by The Spy

Share

The Curb Appeal team has been hard at work these last few weeks restoring the Betty Anne Connolley Memorial Garden, along with some assistance from the Town of Chestertown, who constructed a small retaining wall to prevent soil and mulch from washing away. The Spy has always admired this secluded spot, located at the corner of Mill and Cannon Streets by the Sultana boat yard, even in its disarray.

Nancy Butler, Curb Appeal Chair, said in an email that, “Patsy Hornaday, who was so instrumental in the Chestertown Beautification Committee, provided Curb Appeal with newspaper articles and information about the original garden. According to the original plant list, many of the small plants are gone, but are being purchased and replaced.”

Butler went on to say, “It is starting to look like a special garden again! Please stop by to see all that is happening!” We did and encourage others to do so as well. If you would like to support the efforts of Curb Appeal, please send your donation the Downtown Chestertown Association (with Curb Appeal on the note line) to P. O. Box 745, Chestertown, MD 21620.

I walk past this garden often and am delighted to see it restored. I have always ripped out vines and once tried to rid the sycamore of its headdress of ivy, so this special effort is especially gratifying to me. There has been quite a bit of flora destruction near us (rails-to-trails’ shoulders, field behind my house); more care and thought needs to be put into how we maintain this aspect of Chestertown’s greenness.

I too have been appalled by the condition of this garden but am thankful it has been improved. When we were there in the early evening several months ago, it was forbidding and sort of spooky, an uncomfortable place and hardly welcoming. I was struck by the fact that although the HQ of the town’s maintenance department (commonly known as the “streets crew”) is but a stone’s throw away, the garden seemingly never received a bit of attention from that department of its own volition. I hope the relevant supervisor(s) will put it on the list of places to receive regular care. After all, the whole staff passes the place daily.

The garden is really beautiful. I love the landscape! Thank you so much for the share.
