Interested in competing in this year’s Cardboard Boat Regatta on the Chester River? If so, contact Rachel Field at 410-810-7162 for details on the 6th annual race slated for September 22nd in Chestertown. Now is the time to register your crew and start building a boat out of cardboard, wood glue, chalk and duct tape. “Add several coats of latex-based paint and you’ll be ready to go,” says Field, who is program coordinator of the race.
“As captain on the day of the event, you paddle furiously around the marks and try to cross the finish line in record time,” says Field. There are hundreds of dollars in prizes, she says, as well as gift certificates for the Titanic and People’s Choice awards. Any way you sink or float, it’s great fun on the Chester River. All boats go on display at 12 noon on race day. Captains and crew meet at 2:30 PM, the popular boat parade begins at 2:45 PM, and the race starts at 3:00 PM sharp along the Pavilion in Chestertown’s Wilmer Park. The regatta is open to individuals, businesses, schools, civic groups and non-profit entities in Kent or Queen Anne’s County Maryland. desiring to build a boat and team spirit. Participants must be at least 12 years of age.
The cardboard boat regatta is part of the Chestertown Waterfront Festival from 12:00-4:00 PM on September 22nd. River cruises aboard the 46-foot Callinectes, sailing, kayaking and canoeing on the Chester River, good food and family fun, exhibits on watershed ecology, pony rides, and live music by the Michael Butler Band highlight the festival. Events are organized by the Center for Environment & Society at Washington College. The Festival is free and open to the public. In case of foul weather, activities may be cancelled.
