The performing arts really shine this fall at the Queen Anne’s County Art Council’s Centre for the Arts with sessions in voice, violin, viola and cello. Violinist Caitlin Patton will teach students of all levels how to hold the instrument and bow, and play simple songs. Intermediate students will build on their skills, learning technique, how to produce a beautiful tone and to read music.
Lessons are tailored to the age and skill level of each student. Students will need a violin, viola or cello of appropriate size for student with bow and case, rosin, cloth for cleaning, Suzuki Violin School Vol. 1 book (for beginners; intermediate students should bring any music they are learning). Students are responsible for obtaining their own materials prior to the first lesson. This class is held in the Centre’s upstairs studio. Please contact the Centre regarding accessibility requirements if needed. Classes are four week, one-half-hour private sessions booked on a first-come first served basis from 3 to 7 p.m. and begin on Monday, September 17. Ages 5 and up. $140 for Arts Council members and $155 for nonmembers. The deadline for registration is September 7.
Patton has performed as a violinist and violist with orchestras including the Dover Symphony Orchestra, Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, and Greater Philadelphia Honors Orchestra. She has been teaching since 2002 and giving private lessons since 2003. She has also taught public school students through a program by the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra.
Individual lessons in voice with Georgiann Gibson will provide serious students with the opportunity to advance to their desired singing level, while aspiring singers learn invaluable skills. Techniques for strong vocal development are at the center of the lessons with an emphasis on correct diaphragmatic breathing and support, proper tone production, diction and musical interpretation and presentation.

Gibson was soloist for the Duquesne University Tamburitzans, a European folk ensemble. She has traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States as a vocal talent and was a member of the Pittsburgh Opera Chorus and the Mendelssohn Choir. She was winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society’s Annual Competition. She has performed in numerous recitals as well as a soloist for churches and has a special fondness for mentoring vocal students.
Centre for the Arts classes are designed to renew existing artistic interests and develop new skills. Office hours at 206 South Commerce Street are Tuesday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.
