At 72 acres, Worton Park is the 2nd largest and most used park in Kent County. The University of Maryland Extension Kent County 4-H program, along with Kent County Parks and Recreation, have teamed up to organize the first annual, and maybe bi-annual, Worton Park Green-UP improvement day. The event will take place on Sunday June 24th from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at the Park.
Plans for the day include general park clean-up, installation of a pet waste station, painting baseball backdrops, cleaning picnic tables, pruning and more. Volunteers, both youth and adults, are needed to help with these activities. Many Kent citizens attend the park for sporting events, family reunions, picnics, walking, and other special activities. Up until this point, county employees and sports league volunteers have maintained and taken care of the park. As part of a 4-H Engaging Youth Serving Communities grant, 4-H would like to change this. With so many Kent citizen’s enjoying and participating in Worton Park, 4-H is building a community coalition of youth and adults, agencies and volunteers, county employees and residents to help guide the future of the park and the whole Worton Park Campus.
The Worton Park Green-UP improvement day is an effort to get the project started and have the community become involved in the Park. Anyone wishing to volunteer on Sunday June 24th, can contact the UME 4-H Office at 410-778-1661. Volunteers should dress accordingly for the weather, to possibly get dirty, and bring gardening tools if possible. All volunteers will receive a water bottle for hydration. Youth and adult volunteers who are interested in helping on the Worton Park Campus Steering committee can sign up that day as well.
For additional information, contact Beth Hill at the University of Maryland Extension Office, Kent County at 410-778-1661or Stacey Clough or Myra Butler at Kent County Parks and Recreation, 410-778-1948.
