The Sassafras River Association (SRA) has announced that Jamie Brunkow, the SRA RIVERKEEPER® will be leaving the Sassafras River Association in May to pursue a new opportunity in his home state of Virginia, as RIVERKEEPER® for the James River Association.
In a letter to SRA members, President, Board of Trustees John J. Burke, Jr.and Executive Director Pam Duke wrote, “Jamie has served as the Sassafras RIVERKEEPER® since May 2010. During the past two years, Jamie has raised the visibility of not only his own position, but that of SRA overall. He has formed valuable relationships with community members, represented SRA in state-wide meetings and forums, taken an active role in the WATERKEEPER® Chesapeake activities, expanded our water quality testing program and instituted new projects such as River Radio and Sassafras Paddles. In 2011, Jamie led a successful multi-county fight against a proposed rubble fill; an effort that has earned SRA a respected voice in other important county land use considerations.
Everyone at SRA wishes Jamie success in his new endeavor at the James River Association. Since he is not leaving the Chesapeake watershed, we look forward with anticipation to watching Jamie’s star rise, and to collaborating with our neighbors in Virginia to bring real and lasting change to the Chesapeake Bay.”
Brunkow writes, “As is tradition for the departing Sassafras Riverkeeper, I’ll soon be taking a shot of River water to demonstrate that the River is… just a little bit cleaner. My experience at SRA has only strengthened my commitment and passion for cleaning up our waterways, and I will always look back on my time here with a smile.”
