The University of Delaware has a highly regarded music program with many outstanding student performance groups including the University of Delaware Jazz Ensemble, a 20 member big band that really knows how to swing.
Under the direction of Tom Palmer, the group explores a wide variety of music, past and present. This concert will include some classic Basie arrangements, some standards from the mid-20th century with the band’s male vocalist and some jazz arrangements of more contemporary songs from the band “Radiohead.”
The University of Delaware Jazz Ensemble performs regularly on campus, in schools and at jazz festivals. Each year a well-known guest artist performs with the band. Past guests include Arturo Sandoval, Harry Connick, Jr., Denis DiBlasio, Phil Woods, Dizzy Gillespie, Roger Ingram and Ingrid Jensen.
Featured guest artist this year is 11-year-old trumpet prodigy Geoffrey Gallante, from Alexandria, VA. Gallante has a growing reputation fueled by coast to coast appearances and YouTube videos. He began playing trumpet at the age of four, and his credits include performances in 28 states and as guest artist with five military ensembles. He has also appeared on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” NBC’s “Today” show, and was the youngest soloist ever to perform at the White House. He has performed the National Anthem dozens of times in professional sport venues across the country. Recent guest appearances include the Naples (FL) Concert Band, Plano (TX) Concert Band, Washington (D.C.) Symphonic Brass, Allentown (PA) Band, and the Louisville Symphony.
