The Winter Member’s Show opened Second Friday at the Chestertown Arts League Main Gallery with an opening reception and the announcement of Best in Show winners. Leslie Raimond, Executive Director of the Kent County Arts Council, was the judge for the Winter Member’s Show and selected six winners — three honorable mention and a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Raimond commented that, “an air of the mysterious and surrealistic is found in each of the selections chosen for the awards.”
Best in Show went to Sharon Hardin for her oil painting entitled. “Homestead”. Raimond’s critique of Hardin’s work follows: “Bright color, bold composition and off-beat depiction of a familiar subject create an amazing impact. The style, almost abstract, and the large size of the work add to its strength. This painting combines breath-taking color with a slightly ambiguous approach to the forms.”
Nanny Trippe took the 2nd place award for her photograph, “Mystical Morning”. Raimond explained her choice, “Black and White photography can be an excellent vehicle to create an impression of artfulness, and this picture is an excellent example of this. Broad shafts of light slicing into the dark grove of trees make the viewer aware of an almost holy beauty found in the cathedral of the forest.”
Third place went to Emily Kalwaitis for her acrylic wash painting, “Dream”. Raimond described it, “The innocent, almost child-like rendering of this scene adds to the dream, perhaps nightmare, quality of the painting. Common objects have taken on a strangeness in the surreal world of sleep. The story told in this painting will not be forgotten. “
Honorable mentions went to Terry Wolf for his oil painitng, “Seascape”; Barbara Parker for her photograph, “ Asleep in the Valley of the Temple” and Electra for her oil painitng, “Harlequin Couple.”
The show is mounted at the Main Gallery at the Chestertown Arts League and will run through January 28. Gallery hours are noon to 4:00 on Thursdays and Fridays and 10:00 to 4:00 on Saturdays.
