From the Netherlands, the Dutch/Frisian folk band Kapriol! brings joyful traditional European dance music, traditional Dutch songs and their own modern compositions to the Mainstay in Rock Hall on Sunday June 19 at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $15. For more information and reservations call 410-639-9133. Information is also available at the Mainstay’s website.
Kapriol!’s traditional dances and songs and modern compositions are all influenced by Renaissance music, world music and the modern European festival scene. The members of the group are all multi-instrumentalists (flutes, shawm, accordion, bass, guitar, violin and vocals) which results in their playing not only old songs on modern instruments, but also their own new compositions on traditional instruments. They sing in several languages (including Esperanto) with multiple harmonies and richly varied arrangements. Improvisation is always an important element of their playing.
The band was formed spontaneously in 2009 by musicians who had all performed with other bands at European folk and dance festivals. Kapriol! is in demand across Europe. They have played dances and presented concerts in their native Netherlands as well as Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Poland and Denmark.
They are traveling to the United States to perform at two festivals: the Mystic Sea Music Festival in Connecticut and the Old Songs Festival of Traditional Music and Dance in New York State. The Mainstay was able to book this date in-between the two festivals.
