Mullin/Ashley Associates, Inc., a Mid-Atlantic integrated marketing communications firm, has been recognized in the 2011 Alfred Knight Awards competition for a mobile app developed for Atlantic General Hospital of Berlin, Md.
For the past several years, Atlantic General Hospital has had a “30-minute ER Promise” for treating or triaging those who arrive at the hospital’s Emergency Department. This healthcare institution has also made a commitment to reduce wait times in other service areas.
With the goal of creating an even better patient experience by allowing people to access accurate service wait times in the ED plus other hospital service areas from mobile devices, Mullin/Ashley developed a phone app that displays the wait times for the ER, X-Ray and Lab Services. The mobile app retrieves updates twice per minute to ensure that the wait times are highly accurate. The mobile app was created in three different platforms – iPhone, Android and BlackBerry.
As an adjunct to the program, two large outdoor billboards were reserved on U.S. Routes 50 and 113, the area’s high-traffic trunk highways, which receive and display the “real-time” wait times as well.
In judging the mobile app entry in the Alfred Knight Awards competition, the judges commented on the simplicity of the design, the timely updating of wait-times information, and the overall results of the initiative (the volume of mobile app downloads and the positive ROI stats).

Conducted by the Maryland Society for Healthcare Strategy & Market Development, the Alfred Knight Awards recognizes outstanding work in the field of healthcare marketing and communications. The awards, which cover 26 different communications categories, were announced at a gala event held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel at BWI-Marshall Airport in Baltimore County on April 15, 2011.
Commenting on winning the award, Phillip Nones, president of Mullin/Ashley, stated, “We’re pleased to be recognized for our efforts on behalf of clients like Atlantic General Hospital. The Alfred Knight Awards provides a great opportunity for our work in the healthcare field to be judged according to rigorous standards of excellence.”
