It seems fitting that Karen Somerville would be the Spy’s first profile in spirituality. While Karen could easily have fit into many categories, including music or local African American history, it is her faith that connects the dots to her singing and her lifelong commitment to her community.
It is a story of love, belief, and healing that has given her a voice that rivals some of the best vocalists performing today. She is a unique gift to all who live in and around Chestertown.

No mention is made of Karen’s generosity of spirit demonstrated in the many ways she has given her gift of music to others. Our paths have crossed while working with young people and teachers – Karen exemplifies caring community spirit, and we here in Kent County are fortunate to be the recipients of her talents.

Karen, as part of the Somebarkin’ Trio performed for the Eastern Region Memorial Service for Homicide Victims and their Families in Cecil County . From the first note to the last. the joy and love from the Trio’s voices and souls touch all in attendance. They volunteered their time to this event. Moments before the closing of the ceremony doves were released. Following the release of the doves the Somebarkin’ Trio performed the closing song, Amazing Grace. The dove circles the afternoon sky until the last note was sung. So I can say with certainity that Karen’s voice as well as the other Somebarkin members can touch all of God’s creations. My most heartfelt thanks to Somebarkin’.

Thank you so much for this valued piece about Karen Somerville. I discovered Karen’s wonderful style while she and the Somebarkin’ Trio performed at the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Oct. 2007 during a Washington College lecture. After discovering these masterful performers, I started keeping an eye out for Karen’s engagements in the region. It is touching, inspiring music and my entire family looks forward to the opportunities whenever possible. I think we have something on our schedule for Sept, when the Sombarkin is performing in Chestertown.
