With four, critically acclaimed, albums to their credit, starting with “Dap Dippin’,” in 2002, this nine – piece band out of Brooklyn has created what has been dubbed the “Daptone Sound,”foregoing the current digital methods in favor of analog, recalling the warmth and tone of the old Motown and Stax Studio era. In fact, their most recent cd was recorded on an eight – track tape machine.
They have appeared on numerous television and radio shows, been featured in such august publications as the New York Times Sunday Magazine, and collaborated with numerous musicians. Various members contributed to the infamous Amy Winehouse’s breakout cd, “Back to Black,” including the hits, “Rehab,” and, “You Know I’m No Good.”
Led by the Augusta, Georgia, native Jones, the Dap – Kings tour relentlessly, no mean feat for a nine – piece group. If you want to catch them live, they’re appearing at the Wilmington Opera House on Friday, January 28th, 8pm. I hear they generally pack the house, but last I checked there were still seats available.
Recommended for fans of Aretha, Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, James Brown…funky soul.
