Profile: Christian Havemeyer and the Preservation of the White Swan

September 19, 2010 by Dave Wheelan

Share

Truth be told, many can be credited for bringing a new wave of historic preservation to Chestertown in the early 1970’s. The community has been very lucky in having an extraordinary collection of citizens eager to preserve the town’s architectural past in downtown. And yet, very few have had the forethought, patience, and gentle leadership that Christian Havemeyer displayed with the preservation of White Swan Tavern on High Street.  His commitment and attention to detail, combined with his team of experts, scholars, and craftsmen, resulted in one of the most successful historic preservation projects in the region.  The Spy is pleased to provide this short documentary by Kurt Kolaja on Chris’ recollections as the Tavern turns twenty-nine years old.

Nicely done interview. Chris comes across in a nice light. Addition footage with Michael Bourne would have added a nice touch.

Your interview is so in keeping with Chris Havemeyer – gentle and terribly contributing. Thank you, Chris, for all that you offer Chestertown. We appreciate the White Swan’s landmark status as it has been preserved.

Thank you, Michael Bourne for continuing to be our wonderful source for preservation knowledge and thank you to The Spy for interviews such as this fine one.
