Two big white hats got tossed in the ring for the Maryland House of Delegate seat representing Kent, Queen Anne and parts of Cecil and Caroline Counties.
Jay Jacobs, the mayor of Rock Hall, filed for the Republican nomination today.
Arthur Hock kicked off his campaign for the Democratic nomination Sunday at a fish fry in Wilmer Park on Sunday and got the
endorsement of Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-Md).
Jacobs has served as Rock Hall’s mayor for the past 10 years. He is a past president of the Maryland Mayors Association and is currently president of the Kent County Council of Governments.
“I want to put my understanding of our area and proven experience in our local industries and government to work in the state capitol for the betterment of our counties on the Eastern Shore,” Jacobs said in filing to run.
Hock pledged to supporters, “When I go to Annapolis as your delegate I will listen, learn and lead
through these core principles: promote jobs and economic growth, focus efforts on education, infrastructure and public safety, support the environment and agriculture. . .”
Another Kent County political figure, Commissioner William Pickrum, let it be known last week that he would not be running for the House of Delegates.
The general election for the seat will be in the fall of 2010.
Dawn Jacobs says
FYI – Jay Jacobs is currently the only officially registered Delegate candidate for the 36th District. Art Hock has not officially filed yet – I think that’s an important point. You can verify this and all registration activity on the State Board of Election website http://www.elections.state.md.us.

I was there and Art Hock actually said “sustainable agriculture,”–an important difference and a potential new industry for the Eastern Shore.
We are between Annapolis, Baltimore, Philadelphia and DC after all and it’s the fastest growing agricultural market segment.
Searching for the point says
What is Mrs. Jacobs’s point? Sounds like form over substance. The primary election is more than a year away, yet already I have seen a proliferation of Arthur Hock bumper stickers between Elkton and Kent Island and heard that a couple of hundred people posted to support Arthur Hock at a fish fry. Republicans need to get away from form and behind substance if we are to avoid losing yet another safe seat to the Democrats.
