As we look for balance after a fractious national election and the continuing discord deepening the chasm between the political choices made by family members, friends, and coworkers, Mayor Chris Cerino made it clear that Chestertown’s town government does not dissuade anyone from participating in the town government no matter their political choices.
Cerino wrapped up Monday’s town council meeting with his positive message by saying “We came out of a very challenging presidential election and I felt there were a lot of statements made that were overtly discriminatory…I want everybody to know that as long as I’m Mayor everybody is welcome in Town Hall.”
While Cerino said that this openness should go without saying, he had been approached by community members and asked to make a public statement.
There is no time better than the present to share a positive message from local government.

I am delighted with the mayor’s statement, one small but bright spot in an evolving political situation on a national level that is threatening further discrimination not only against minorities, but also against the elderly and the poor (threats to Social Security, Medicare, Food Stamps and to almost a century of social progress in our country. Given the threat against immigrants and Moslems in the upcoming national administration, I would encourage the mayor and council to declare Chestertown a Sanctuary Community.

Well said, Chris! That attitude is one of the many reasons I am proud to be a part of this town.

Well said, Mayor Cerino. How very sad this is even a topic that needed to be discussed.
