Once America chooses a president-elect, the work will not be over for analysts across the country as they tease out the threads of influence on this election. The Washington College Hillel will present a panel titled “Religion and Values in the 2016 Elections: Taking Stock” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 17 in Hynson Lounge. This event is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by the Institute for the Study of Religion, Politics and Culture.
The panel’s presenters will include Lesley Israel from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, Rabbi Peter Hyman, and Rebecca DeSantis ’15. Joseph Prud’homme, associate professor of political science and director of the College’s Institute for the Study of Religion, Politics, and Culture, will moderate.
Lesley Israel has served as expert adviser, trainer, and observer in many countries, including Afghanistan, Armenia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Guyana, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro, Palestine, Russia, and Tanzania. She held the position of senior election officer in Bosnia’s first post-war election and performed subsequent other electoral duties in Bosnia, which afforded her honorary membership to the Bosnian Association of Election Officials.Israel also worked on the national staff of a number of presidential campaigns, including Hubert Humphrey, Birch Bayh, Scoop Jackson, and Ted Kennedy.
Rabbi Peter Hyman graduated from the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1977 and was ordained in 1980. In 2005, he received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from the Hebrew Union College. Involved with all aspects of synagogue life and community relations, Hyman has received many awards from religious and community groups, including the Union for Reform Judaism’s Belin Award for Outreach Program Excellence and the Silver Buffalo Distinguished Service Award from the Boy Scouts of America.
Until her graduation in 2016, Rebecca DeSantis served as president of Hillel, Washington College’s student-run Jewish community organization. She currently studying Public Administration at American University.
