One of the little secrets of Downrigging Weekend, the extremely popular annual event sponsored by the Sultana Education Foundation later this month, won’t be found among the dozens of special craft expected to be on the Chester River or on the beautiful Sultana itself. No, in this case, is the annual keynote lecture on Friday evening at the Garfield.
Ever since Downrigging started in 2001, the Sultana folks have complemented their three days of nautical celebration with some of the most acclaimed writers on life at sea. From last year’s New York Times reporter Ian Urbina’s spellbinding remarks on 21st century privates in Southeast Asia to best-selling science author Dava Sobel, Downrigging Weekend has been the place to hear and learn of some of the most remarkable stories from the sea.
That tradition continues this year with America’s Cup sailor and journalist Gary Jobson. The author of nineteen books, more than 1,200 articles, a dozen or more documentaries, the Annapolis-based Jobson has experienced the ultimate sailing life, including being a member of the crew for the most competitive and dangerous ocean races in the world.
The Spy ran over to the Western Shore a few weeks ago to catch up with Gary and talk about his experience, his current film on Sable Island, and his past experiences with the likes of Ted Turner and Walter Cronkite.
This video is approximately eight minutes in length. For more information about Downrigging Weekend in Chestertown, please go here
