Patients in 14 of the private and semi-private rooms at the UM Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Chestertown are enjoying the new visitors’ chairs, dressers, and over-the-bed tray tables that replaced the older versions recently.
“Everyone likes new furniture, and we are looking forward to doing more,” said Scott D. Burleson, Executive Director of the Shore Medical Center at Chestertown.
The new furniture was funded by UM Shore Regional Health as part of an ongoing upgrade of facilities throughout the entire SRH system. This acquisition was made after a thorough review by Barb Follum, RN, IP, DON, found furniture of varying ages at the Chestertown facility. Ms. Follum’s investigative skills proved that a picture is indeed worth a thousand words.
“Barb had a very good documentation process,” Burleson continued. “She took pictures of the existing and proposed furniture, and that really helped the budget committee with their decision.”
The UM Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Chestertown, formerly known as Chester River Manor, is a 98-bed facility that provides skilled and intermediate care and rehabilitation services including physical, speech and occupational therapies and long-term, respite and hospice care.
“This is a very positive development,” said Stewart R Seitz, the facility’s Director. “We will replace the furniture in the other rooms over next few years, and then we will begin replacing the beds. We are fortunate to receive good pricing through the Maryland procurement system. This new furniture contributes to the overall feelings of satisfaction for our patients and their families.”
Donna Walker, RN and Unit Manager at the facility, agrees. “We are so happy to have this new furniture,” Walker said recently. “We try to make things as nice as possible for patients and visitors — everyone has noticed, and all the patients and their visitors love it.”
As part of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), University of Maryland Shore Regional Health is the principal provider of comprehensive health care services for more than 170,000 residents of Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, and Talbot counties on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
