Ever wonder what an artist’s studio really looks like? Chestertown RiverArts’ 17th Annual Studio Tour allows the visitor a chance to take a sneak peek inside these creative spaces. This free, self-guided tour focuses on Kent and Queen Anne’s Counties on the picturesque Eastern Shore of Maryland taking place over two weekends, October 22-23 and October 29-30, 10am-5pm, rain or shine. More than 50 artists, many nationally known, invite visitors in to talk, check out how they work, and provide the opportunity to buy original artwork at studio prices.
The art is as diverse as the artists who create it, with styles ranging from traditional to avant-garde, expressed in a variety of media that include painting, photography, sculpture, metal work, pottery, fiber, woodcraft, jewelry, furniture, glass, and more. The studios vary considerably; most are single studios but there are also several locations that have guest artists.
Historic Chestertown, the tour headquarters, located on the banks of the Chester River, is the oldest mid-Atlantic port of entry in the state dating back to the 1640s. It has been designated by the state of Maryland as an Arts and Entertainment District, and according to Mayor, Chris Cerino remarked, “Chestertown is fast becoming a regional arts destination.” In addition to the charm of Chestertown, out-of-towners often remark on how much they enjoy the tranquility of the countryside, water views and the counties’ other small, friendly towns.
Chestertown is 90 miles from Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia, all well situated for a day trip or weekend get-away. To help you plan your trip go to the Studio Tour’s new website, www.studiotour.chestertownriverarts.org. where you will see a brief video that gives a feel for the tour and has links to the artists’ websites so that you can decide the ones that interest you the most.
It is recommended that visitors start their tour at the RiverArts Gallery, 315 High Street, in the breezeway, where there will be an exhibit of works by the artists on the tour. The exhibit will open on First Friday, October 7. Brochures that will guide you through the tour may be found at the Gallery and at restaurants and shops throughout Kent County.
For those that are more digitally inclined, note that the new website is mobile ready and contains many features that will help to navigate the tour. Visitors will be able to find information on each artist by name, location, or medium. Interactive maps will help you navigate the tour more easily, and there will be pre-planned, recommended routes for taking in the sights. You’ll also be able to find other attractions such as restaurants and B&B’s.
Combine your Studio Tour with the popular Downrigging Weekend, October 29-30. Chestertown’s schooner, SULTANA, is joined by many historic tall ships and Chesapeake Buyboats (www.sultanaeducation.org). Many of the art studios are within easy walking distance of the ships. All this makes for a fun family outing.
