Summer heat did not discourage 88 golfers at the Chester River Yacht & Country Club from participating in the annual Pink Polar Bear Golf Tournament that benefits women’s health care services at UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown.
Tournament participants, who ranged in age from 22 to 83, turned out on Sunday, July 31 for a traditional scramble-style game with additional accommodation offered based on a combination of each participant’s age and handicap.
According to tournament organizers Gwinn Derricott and Jane Hukill, who both volunteer at UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown (Hukill also served on the Chester River Health Foundation Board for nine years), this year’s turnout was the best yet. “The low entry fee of $20 goes directly to the Foundation and other proceeds help support cash prizes,” explained Derricott. “We also raised funds through the 50/50 raffle and the sale of Mulligans and ‘gimme putts,’ which added to the fun of the competition.”
While the tournament originally was billed for ladies, men have been welcome participants as long as they show up in pink shirts. “We look forward to continuing this fundraiser for many years to come,” says Derricott. “The people of Kent and northern Queen Anne’s Counties are so fortunate to have the Leh Center for women’s health and its outstanding cancer detection and other technology.”
“It’s always gratifying to see community residents come out in force to support our hospital and to know that they have such a good time raising funds for an important cause even when the weather is unforgiving,” says Maryann Ruehrmund, executive director, Chester River Health Foundation. “The Foundation Board really appreciates the time and effort, as well as the funds raised, by the volunteers who organize this event each year.”
