Low Lily explores the roots and branches of American folk music with traditional influences and modern inspiration. Liz Simmons (vocals and guitar), Flynn Cohen (vocals, guitar, and mandolin), and Lissa Schneckenburger (vocals and fiddle) combine a deep feel for traditional bluegrass, Irish, Scottish, New England, and Old Time Appalachian sounds with stellar compositions and inventive arrangements for a music that is rooted yet contemporary. At the Mainstay, they will be joined by Corey DiMario (of Crooked Still) on the double bass.
Liz Simmons grew up listening to her mother sing traditional songs from Ireland, Scotland, England and America, as well as the New Orleans brass music her father plays. Since then, she has developed a unique vocal and guitar style that draws from her musical history in folk and ballad traditions as well as the sounds of contemporary folk music, and she has also become a respected songwriter.
She is a graduate of Goddard College (2005), where she studied American vernacular music of the 1920s and 30s. She also performs with the all-women group EVA, who can be seen onstage regularly alongside Livingston Taylor, Tom Chapin and Melanie and has performed with Long Time Courting, the John Whelan Band, Hannah Sanders, North Cregg, The Sevens, and Southeast Expressway. Her singing is featured in the film “Time and Charges”, written and directed by Grammy and Emmy award winner Ernest Thompson.
Acoustic guitarist and mandolinist Flynn Cohen has performed all over the world with many notable acts in traditional and contemporary acoustic music. In addition to performing with Low Lily, he can be seen on concert and festival stages with legendary Irish Accordion player John Whelan, modern bluegrass band Tony Watt & Southeast Expressway and his own solo projects.
Flynn has also performed with Halali, The Sevens, Aoife Clancy, Cathie Ryan, Lawrence Nugent, Skip Healy, Joe Derrane and Frank Farrell, Adrienne Young, Jake & Taylor Armerding, Gail Davies, Jilly Martin, Malibu Storm, Bruce MacGregor, Women of Ireland, The Vancouver Symphony, Revels, Christmas Celtic Sojourn, and Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, among others. He studied Music at Dartington College of Arts in Devon, England and at Mills College in Oakland, California and when he is not touring, he manages a large roster of students in his private studio in the Boston area.
Fiddler and singer Lissa Schneckenburger grew up in Maine as an active member of the folk community where she learned to play at the feet of some of the most venerable musicians in New England. She is now one of the most well-respected and versatile fiddlers in the northeast, a graduate of The New England Conservatory of who has played all over the world as a solo artist and with Solas, Childsplay, and the fiddle group Halali.
Recently she released “Covers”, which as the name suggests, is a mix of beloved pop songs from the 1950s to today. Co produced with Aoife O’Donovan (of Crooked Still and The Goat Rodeo Sessions), Lissa’s sixth solo album reinterprets classics by artists like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Nelly, Weezer, The Magnetic Fields, Dire Straits, and many more
The Mainstay (Home of Musical Magic) is the friendly informal storefront performing arts center on Rock Hall’s old time Main Street.
