Mississippi–born blues guitarist Jarekus Singleton and his band will take a swing through the Eastern Shore and perform at the Garfield Center for the Arts in Chestertown on Friday, June 10th, as part of the Blues at the Garfield concert series.
Born to a family of church musicians and vocalists, Singleton picked up the bass guitar at age nine, playing with his uncle’s gospel band, later switching to lead guitar. He counts as influences all three Kings, (BB, Freddie and Albert), and Stevie Ray Vaughn. His cutting-edge sound, while firmly rooted in the blues tradition, combines rock energy, R&B grooves, funky rhythms and hip hop wordplay. USA Today has called him, “…a major new talent,” while the Washington Post describes Singleton as, “…an exciting new young blues guitarist with melody, hooks, swagger and a strong original voice. His lyrics are modern, acutely poetic, and deeply mature…”
Current band members are James Salone, organ, Ben Sterling, bass, and John “Junior” Blackmon, drums and percussion.
This show is the third in a series of six Blues at the Garfield concerts. Upcoming shows include the Sherman Holmes/Brooks Long Project on September 9, and the fabulous Nighthawks on November 11.
Tickets to the Friday, June 10th concert are $30/$20 for students, and are available on line at www.GarfieldCenter.org or by calling the box office at 410 810 2060.
The Garfield Center for the Arts at the Prince Theatre is located at 210 High Street, Chestertown, MD, 21620.
