“I was raised with baby chicks. When I was little Mom and Dad let the chickens have their own chicks all summer. I raised the ones that were kicked out of the nest. They were my pets. I put doll clothes on them and put them in the baby buggy. The first year Doug and I were together we got a flock of chicks, raised them to eat them, put them in the freezer. After that we started getting chicks.”
“Our kids grew up here very active, very healthy, never sat still or behind a screen. I never allowed any electronics except for the TV. On school snow days we had a yard full of kids. Doug built a zipline in the woods for the kids. We’re a mile from the river so we’d do bike rides, roller blade, fish or swim off the dock – all these corn fields to play in.”
“The best thing about living out in the country – the peace, the quiet, seeing the stars at night, hearing nothing during the day sometimes. We get all the winter suns, nice and warm, very soothing and very comforting. I’m passionate about the gardening and having the dog being able to run free with me.”

Editor Note: The Chestertown Spy and RiverArts have partnered in 2016 to share the art organization’s community arts project “Humans of Kent County,” designed to celebrate the wonderful, unique folks who live and work in Kent County. Citizens are invited to interview and photograph from young to old from all corners of the county and to submit a photograph and brief story to be part of the project. It will be posted on the Spy each week and each quarter the most interesting photos and stories will be enlarged and produced for an exhibition at the RiverArts gallery in Chestertown.
