The Gunston School’s Rowing Team had a strong showing at the Maryland State High School Rowing Championships held on Sunday, May 1 in soggy conditions at Washington College, bringing home 4 medals, two silver medal finishes and two bronze finishes.
The Girl’s Novice 4 of Michell Pagan (Chestertown, MD), Elena Sherman (Middletown, DE), Emily Teng (Centreville, MD), Katie Easter (Grasonville, MD) and Megan Prochaska (Worton, MD) had a strong finish in their final and came away with Gunston’s first silver medal of the day ahead of crews from Walter Johnson, Churchill, and Montgomery Blair.
Gunston’s other silver was won by the Boy’s Second Varsity Four of Eli Schut (Rock Hall, MD), Mitchell Naumann (Rock Hall, MD), Neel Patel (Middletown, DE), Sam Wargotz (Queenstown, MD), and Jack Xu (Centreville, MD). In the last race of the day the boys surged into 2nd place fending off crews from DeMatha.
Gunston’s bronze medalists were the Boy’s Varsity Four and the Girl’s Second Varsity Eight of Samara Pyfrom (Davidsonville, MD), Marisa Pisapia (Galena, MD), Leah Hellwege (Stevensville, MD), Sarah Bryant (Davidsonville, MD), Abby Miller (Easton, MD), Jo Wanner (Church Hill, MD), Brynne Kneeland (Stevensville, MD), Natalie Purpora (Centreville, MD), Natalie Prochaska (Worton, MD) and who came out ahead of Notre Dame Prep and Roland Park Country School.
The Boy’s Varisty Four of Lauren Covell (Annapolis, MD), Ben Jones (Chestertown, MD), Garrett Rudolfs (Centreville, MD), Alex Papadopoulos (Townsend, DE), and Ethan Boone (Centreville, MD) was the closest race of the day coming in third behind St. Paul’s School by .4 seconds and ahead of Montgomery Blair, Churchill, and DeMatha.
Gunston started the morning heats with qualifying finishes from the Girl’s Varsity and Girl’s Novice 4’s. The Girl’s Varsity 4 of Tong Shen (Easton, MD), Olivia Sherman (Middletown, DE), Maddy Romberger (Sudlersville, MD), Aggie Raymond (Easton, MD) and Kylee Naumann (Rock Hall, MD) went on to the afternoon finals to finish 6th in the state behind crews from Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Holton-Arms, and Elizabeth Seton High School.
“Today’s results reflect the mental and physical preparation this team has put in starting with our pre-season practices in August, winter conditioning, and the fine tuning during the last two weeks of practice leading up to this event,” said Gunston’s Head Coach Nicole Stimpson. “We are lucky to have great competition in the state of Maryland that has allowed our team to get faster year after year.”
