Two painting classes will be offered, one in May and one in June. Beginning Painting will be taught on Tuesdays, May 10, 17, 24 and 31; 6:00-8:00pm. Participants will explore the fundamentals of painting and become comfortable with basic acrylic painting techniques.
Introduction to Plein Air Painting will take place Tuesdays, June 7, 14, 21, and 28; 6:00pm-8:00pm. Participants will explore plein air painting – painting outdoors! The class will meet rain or shine, and paint indoors in case of heavy rains.

Classes will be taught by Raven Bishop, an award winning National Board Certified Visual Arts educator, community art consultant and mentor artist. She is the Artistic Director for Creating Communities’ Arts Mentorship Academy, an organization that provides exemplary arts programming for at-risk- and at-need youth in the Annapolis area. She is also the Middle Level Division Director and Vice President of Professional Development for the Maryland Art Education Association and will soon be coordinating and curating their social media initiatives. An artist in her own right, Raven works as a freelance graphic designer/marketing consultant for small businesses.
Please join us for a Raku Pottery Workshop and gathering on Saturday, May 21st, at Marilee Schumann’s Studio, 506 Old McGinnis Lane in Chestertown, 10:00am-5:00pm. The workshop includes glazing and firing in this unique style. If you wish to use your own pottery, it must be on the fire shelf in the Clay Studio by May 10. Otherwise, you may purchase pots at the event from $5-$25. The cost for Members is $65 and $85 for Nonmembers.
Marilee Schumann, a popular, award winning, local artist is a regular as an instructor at the RiverArts Clay Studio. Marilee has an M.F.A. in Sculpture from the University of Maryland and has exhibited her work at shows throughout the East Coast. Most notably, she received the Anwar Sadat Art for Peace Prize. Marilee is owner of the Tree of Life Gallery of American Craft in Chestertown and a Member of CREATE, a fine craft gallery which will showcase the work of five extradordinary member artists as well as wonderful guest artists curated by the sixth member, Carla Massoni.
A Talavera Workshop will be taught Mondays, June 6, 8, 13, and 15; 6:00pm-8:30pm at the RiverArts Clay Studio, 204 High Street, Chestertown. Talavera is a decorative pottery tradition primarily in Italy, the Iberian Peninsula, and Mexico. Students will learn the primary drawing and painting techniques for talavera decoration: lines, brushstrokes, colors, etching, etc. The workshop will consist of a series of basic exercises on paper and pottery, as well as some brief background and context. Students will be encouraged to adapt techniques to their own styles and skill levels. Pottery will be provided to decorate and/or participants may bring their own pottery as well. The class is open to all skill levels. The cost of the workshop is $150 Members and $190 Nonmembers.
The Talavera class will be taught by Fredy Granillo who has worked for more than 15 years in the Talavera style ceramics workshop in El Salvador. In 2014 he experimented with Talavera ceramics in a more creative form. His work has been shown in El Salvador, Guatemala, Cuba, and the U.S.
