From the labor fields to campgrounds, church, and on Broadway; gospel music and its barrier-breaking genres are a catalyst to the souls’ expression of faith through praise and worship. On April 2nd the Garfield Center for the Arts will be host to the hymns of such greats as Thomas Dorsey, Isaac Watts, Elvis Presley, Edwin Hawkins, and Hank Williams, as well as the spirituals of contemporary choirs, and the special feature of southern gospel music of quartets by the Pilgrim Travelers.
Craig Gibson, hosts the evening, playing the part of the 18th century traveling preacher as he leads us through the rich history of gospel music in America. Featuring the vocal talents of Sombarkin’ (Karen Somerville, Lester Barrett, Jr. & Jerome McKinney), Portia Turner, Tim Dove, The Simmons Family, Friends of Faith and more. Musicians include Ernest Greene on piano, Jerome McKinney, Jr. on drums, Tom Anthony on bass, and Seth Kibel on woodwinds.
The show is produced by Karen Somerville and sponsored by Dr. Janet Brandon, and the Kent County Arts Council.
