RiverArts is pleased to announce the opening of registration for our new KidSPOT After School program and our popular KidSPOT Summer Camp. KidSPOT is dedicated to bringing out the creative spark in the children of our community, and these programs promise to do just that.
KidSPOT After School is a six-week program for children in grades 1-5, running from March 7 through Aprill 22, with one week off for Spring Break. Each day of the week focuses on creative play around a different theme. On Mondays, children will explore art, culture and languages from around the world. On Tuesdays, children will STEAM ahead with hands on activities in science, technology, engineering, art and math. Theatre Arts will be the focus of Wednesdays, with reader’s theatre, improvisation, puppetry and theatre games. Thursday’s activities will focus on our local area, with walking trips, guest teachers and community projects. Fridays will be all about Fun and Games, with non-competitive games, movement activities, yoga and dance.
Elizabeth Healy is the coordinator of the program. She is a retired public school teacher who has been a vital part of the KidSPOT community. Elizabeth will be supported by a talented group of specialized instructors that will provide learning through play in a fun safe environment. The program is underwritten by a donation from Andy and Leslie Price. RiverArts hopes to use the experience of this first six-week program as a springboard for additional after school programming.
KidSPOT Camp is back again and has been expanded to six weeks, including a week at RiverArts’ Clay Studio. Once again, the camp is fortunate to be led by Mary Ann Herron along with a group of talented and specialized instructors. The program is intended for children aged 6 to 12, except for the Clay Studio week, for which participants must be 8 years old.
Camp opens the week of June 20 at Clay Studio, where the participants will explore sculpture and pottery. The week of June 27 is Eco-Art, where participants will discover the possibilities of creating work that celebrates and projects the Chesapeake watershed. Making marks the week of July 11 will have participants learning and exploring various painting and drawing techniques as well as how artists generate ideas. Art in Science, Science in Art is the theme of the week of July 18. Using a variety of materials, participants will make explosive works of art while learning about the science behind their creations, from volcano eruptions and chromatography collages to sun prints. Media Mix Up is the them of the week of July 25. Children will have the opportunity to combine different art techniques and materials to create fun and original works including masks, mosaics, and sand paintings. The last week of camp begins August 1 and will focus on “Design Construction.” Children will have the opportunity to bring their imagination to life by designing and building things such as cars out of cardboard, sewing a superhero cape or building a catapult. Camp will finish with the 2nd Annual KidSPOT Camp Art Show from 5-8pm on August 5.
Each camp session is Monday through Friday, and participants may choose to participate in full day or half day sessions.
