If the Mid-Shore Community Foundation was a living person rather than a regional philanthropic organization, like, for example, a Ms. Jane Midshore, it’s perhaps more likely that every Eastern Shore student bound for private education would know that name by heart.
That’s because every year the region’s community foundation sends out a total of $500,000 of scholarship support to over 100 Mid-Shore students. But since these grants represent dozens of small family funds collected by the MSCF since it was founded in 1992, it’s understandable that it remains the quiet, modest partner in ensuring that the Eastern Shore’s best and brightest can fulfill their dreams with an affordable education.
John Lewis, the headmaster at the Gunston School in Centreville and the current volunteer chair of the MSCF Scholarship Committee, nonetheless wants the Mid-Shore community to know what a friend they have in the Foundation and its real impact it on people’s lives and future.
In John’s second interview with the Spy, he talks about the scholarship program at the MSCF and more precisely the challenges faced by local students in affording private education as well as schools, like Gunston, adjusting to a new economy after the Great Recession.
