A festive First Friday kicks off Chestertown’s WinterFest, a weekend filled with carolers, toy trains, shopping, kids crafts and activities, wreath making, stagings of “A Christmas Carol” at the Garfield Center, rousing holiday concerts by the Chester River Chorale, and the proverbial “and more.” It wraps up Sunday with a performance by the Eastern Shore Wind Ensemble. With admission fees ranging from FREE to reasonable, a full schedule of activities will be offered along the town’s tree-lined brick sidewalks. For info, visit townofChestertown.com or www.downtownchestertown.org, and check the Downtown Chestertown Association Facebook page for updates.
A recent addition to the WinterFest schedule is a pop-up gallery show mounted by seven Washington College art students under the guidance of their professor, Renee van der Stelt. Titled “Dear Oblivious: Art for Social Change,” the exhibition will be staged in two locations: Play it Again, Sam cafe, 108 S. Cross Street, and the vacant first-floor space at 217 High Street. It will be open for First Friday, 5 to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday morning, 8 to noon. The seven students who will show work are Megan Dulin, Logan Hurt, Carley Kendall, Kiko Kobayashi, Caitlin Martinez, Alexis Stella, and Marie Wrenn.
Also new to the WinterFest lineup this year is a “Style and Scholarship” fashion show and brunch hosted by Mimi’s Closet and the Washington College Women’s League as a benefit for the Helen Gibson Scholarship Fund. The event will take place Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Hynson-Ringgold House, the historic brick mansion at 106 S. Water Street that serves as the official president’s residence for Washington College. Tickets are $35 for general admission and $20 for students. Reservations are required; call 410-739-5402 or 443-282-0225, or visit Mimi’s Closet, 307 High Street.
Mayor Chris Cerino encourages residents and visitors to come downtown and enjoy the events and performances: “The town will sparkle with holiday lights, the streets will be alive with performers, and it will be a perfect atmosphere for shopping local and celebrating the holidays in an authentic way.”
