Author, Rachelle Burk will visit Kent School on October 19 as part of the School’s Kudner Leyon Visiting Writers Program. Ms. Burk will spend the full day on campus working with students from pre-k through eighth grade in different intervals.
According to her website, Rachelle Burk is a writer of fiction, non-fiction and poetry for children and a regular contributing writer for Scholastic Science World classroom magazine. She brings a unique combination; not only is she an author but she is also a well-known children’s entertainer. This combination allows Rachelle to create a powerful, educational and funny presentation. Burk’s books include picture books for young children, early chapter books and novels for older children.
Brittany Hester, Kent School’s librarian coordinates the program. “We are excited to have Ms. Burk join us. She will have the chance to work with every Kent School student and teacher. She is at home in front of an audience and I think that skill will truly help our students understand some of the qualities in themselves that could translate to a writer’s life.”
Each year, Kent School hosts an acclaimed visiting author as part of the school’s Kudner Leyon Visiting Writers Program. Burk joins a long list of visiting writers including Margie Pallatini, Nick Bruell, Priscilla Cummings, Wendy Mass, Jack Gantos and Mary Downing Hahn. Kent School’s program began in 2000 as a memorial to two alumni, Ariana Kudner ‘91 and Amanda Leyon ‘91 who lost their lives in a car accident. Program founder, Chris McClary and classmate of Ariana and Amanda said, “The Kudner Leyon Visiting Writers program is a fitting tribute to both girls who shared a love of books, writing and literature. I know that they would be pleased that we are offering such a high quality program to our students and students from other area schools who attend.” The program is funded through the generosity of individuals and through a grant from the Arthur Kudner Fund of the Mid-Shore Community Foundation.
