With Easton’s popular “Airport Day“just around the corner, the Spy has taken a special look at the life of aviation and aviators on the Mid-Shore. It is quite an impressive story.
Over at the airplane hangers on any given day, a special breed of flyers gathers to share a unique fellowship with fellow pilots who have a passion for flight. From retired Air Force One captains and top executives at Airbus to recreational Cessna 150 pilots, almost every aspect of America’s aviation world shows up to chat.
One of them is Hunter Harris. Perhaps no pilot at Easton Airport can match the scope and range of Hunter Harris’ 30 year plus experience in commercial and recreational aviation. And the one part of his resume no one can touch, at least locally, is his long career as a blimp pilot.
Born and raised outside of Chestertown, Hunter made a career out of flying blimps with livery sponsors like Fuji Film and MetLife to cover football games or other flagship events in almost every state in the union. At an average speed of 35 miles per hour at fying at approximately 1,000 feet, Harris would go cross country to move the ship to the next gig giving him an extraordinary perspective of the United States and its people.
In his Spy interview, Hunter talks about blimp flying and shares rare footage of his flights over the Mississippi River at 300 feet as well as elementary schools whose children created signs with body formation to say hello.
