The Garfield Center for the Arts at the Prince Theatre will present its eleventh annual ten-minute play festival, Short Attention Span Theatre (SAST ), September 18-20 and 25-27. The laugh-out-loud play fest showcases many favorite actors, directors and authors — including original never-before-seen works by local playwrights. This year’s production features four such scripts, chosen from more than 30 submissions.
The play selection committee, headed by Mark Sullivan, SAST executive producer, carefully reads and discusses each submission, then works with selected playwrights to polish their final plays, and to match each script with a director.
The locally-written works selected for this year’s production are:
• Wishgranting 101 by Paul Briggs of Chestertown (who currently resides in Easton, Maryland), directed by Keith Thompson;
• DMV Anonymous by Tia Glomb of Betterton, Maryland, directed by Tim Maloney;
• Bride’s Dread Revisited, by Earl Lewin of Chestertown, directed by Tia Glomb; and
• The Envelope, written and directed by Mark Sullivan of Worton, Maryland.
All the selected playwrights are members of the Garfield’s Live Playwrights’ Society, a group that meets monthly with the goal of fostering a community of playwrights, actors and critics, but the competition is open to all aspiring playwrights in the area.
Published plays rounding out the evening are:
• Funeral Parlor by Christopher Durang, directed by Hester Sachse;
• Nothing by Philip Dawkins, directed by Diane Landskroener;
• A Scary Question by Wayne Rawley, directed by Sarah Crump; and
• There Shall Be No Bottom: A Bad Play for Worse Actors by Mark O’Donnell, directed by Jim Landskroener.
“We have a terrific lineup of plays this year, and are thrilled to give local writers a chance to see their works performed,” said Sullivan. “The fact that for more than ten years now, our audiences have always loved this show and asked for more, tells us we’re creating really great theatre, right here in Chestertown.”
Performances are 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $15 and $5 for students with ID (plays include some adult content, and may not be suitable for children under 13). Call 410-810-2060 or visit www.garfieldcenter.org.
