Fire departments throughout Kent, Queen Anne’s, Cecil, Dover, Delaware and the Western Shore, and even a Camden, Wyoming crew who happened to be in the area, responded a 4-alarm blaze that devastated a Washington College building on the 500 block of Washington Avenue.
According to sources, the fire broke out about 8 pm Saturday night. No College personnel were injured.
Four firefighters were hospitalized and released.
The building was the site of the College’s IT and Business Department.
Ironically the history of the building includes a fire that razed The Pub lounge in the 1980s. The College had been leasing the building.
Responders answered the 4-alarm call from Dover, Middletown, Centreville, Church Hill, Cecilton, Sudlersville, Crumpton, Maryville and Goldsborough.
“We needed the manpower more than anything, but we had to call them out of the building at a certain point because we knew the roof was going to collapse,” Chief Bruce Neal said on Sunday.
The fire is now under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshall.
